Welcome to the Dorset HIFU Centre
The centre was founded to bring the benefits of HIFU technology to cancer sufferers and their families. Prostate cancer is the first cancer to be treated with HIFU technology in the UK using the Sonablate® 500 system from Misonix and Focus Surgery from the USA. It is envisaged that other cancers will be treated using HIFU in the future.

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a new way to treat cancer.In Europe, doctors have had the greatest experience in HIFU treating cancer of the prostate. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) have recently approved the use of HIFU for the treatment of prostate cancer in the UK.
Clinician
Whilst most established treatments for localized prostate cancer are similar in their ability to prevent both disease progression and prostate cancer related death, they differ markedly in their side effect profile. In low risk disease this side-effect profile is deemed by many to be unacceptably high.
